Since 1981, Ayusa has been a leader in providing life-changing cultural exchange experiences for high school students around the world. As part of the Tomodachi Softbank Leadership Program, in collaboration with the Center for Cities and Schools at UC Berkeley, Ayusa has designed an intensive three week program for Japanese high school students focusing on global leadership development and community service. Students will engage in a participatory learning process modeled after the Y-PLAN methodology (developed by the UC Berkeley Center for Cities & Schools), which guides students through a process to engage real-world stakeholders and participants in global sustainability projects. Students will learn leadership skills, and develop individual community service action and volunteer projects to implement in their home communities. The program will feature extensive contact with Americans through their academic program, a weekend homestay, social and sightseeing activities, along with exposure to American culture and values.
The program design incorporates community service projects, cultural enrichment activities, global skills training, and other types of experiential individual and group learning to develop civic responsibility and commitment to communities as well as inspiring future leaders to be agents of positive change. Additionally, the program aims to equip participants to take action locally on issues of international importance and to empower, inspire and prepare them to work towards creating a peaceful international community.
Tomodachi Softbank Youth Mentor Program
Ayusa is proud to announce our exclusive “mentoring” program where we invite American high school and university students to attend workshop activities and interact with our Japanese students. A high Japanese:American ratio ensures that our Japanese students are personally introduced to American culture. American students will experience a rich cross-cultural curriculum in a college setting.
Objective:
As an Ayusa Mentor you will assist in providing Japanese program participants with an enjoyable experience in the US.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Participate in and provide leadership to Japanese students during workshop activities and classes.
• Attend the workshop for scheduled classes and/or activities.
• Share cultural experiences with students.
• Assist students in improving their conversational English.
• Help workshop staff to manage students during activities and field trips.
• Attend the Mentor orientation and scheduled Mentor meetings.
Recognition & Support:
This is an ideal opportunity to participate in a unique cultural exchange opportunity, gain leadership skills, share knowledge of American culture, and meet international teens.
Successful mentors will receive a letter of reference from Ayusa. This may be useful for college applications or future careers.
Schedule:
The program runs from July 21 – August 12, 2012 at UC Berkeley, plus activities and field trips around the Bay area.
Time Commitment:
Mentors are required to commit to 10 hours during the program. Schedule of events and options will be provided to mentors at orientation.
